The Nuclear Envelope after KMnO4 Fixation
نویسنده
چکیده
Studies with the electron microscope have revealed a structural plan common to the nuclear envelopes of many types of cells (e.g. 1-6, 8, 11, 13). Nearly all envelopes examined to date consist of two membranes each roughly 50 to 80 A in thickness separated by a perinuclear space of somewhat greater, but variable dimensions. In addition there exist discontinuities in the envelope which generally appear as "pores" in transverse sections or as "annuli" in tangential and surface views. There is, however , considerable uncertainty regarding the patency of the pores and the fine structure of the annuli. Nearly all investigators

The fine structure of the normal chorio-allantoic membrane of the chick-embryo
The chorio-allantoic membranes of White Leghorn chick embryos at 10 to 12 days after laying were fixed in Palade's buffered osmium tetroxide or in Luft's potassium permanganate. After fixation in these two ways the general appearance is similar, but there are differences in certain tissue elements. Cell membranes are well preserved after fixation in KMnO4. Certain lipid inclusions in the cytopl...
متن کاملIsolation and structure of the lipid envelopes from the nitrogen-fixing vesicles of Frankia sp. strain CpI1.
Frankia vesicles are differentiated during nitrogen starvation; they contain nitrogenase whether produced by free-living frankiae or by frankiae in actinorhizal root nodules. Vesicles are surrounded by envelopes of several monolayers of uncharacterized lipid. It has been suggested that the envelope limits diffusion of O2 into the vesicle cytoplasm, thereby preventing inactivation of nitrogenase...
متن کاملOn the Fine Structure and Composition of the Nuclear Envelope
Nuclei from nearly ripe eggs of Rana pipiens were isolated and cleaned in 0.1 M KCl. The whole nucleus was then digested to various degrees with ribonuclease or trypsin, followed by washing and fixation in either osmium tetroxide or potassium permanganate. The nuclear envelope was dissected off, placed on a grid, air dried, and compared with undigested controls in the electron microscope. Some ...
متن کاملAttachment of Intranuclear Annulate Lamellae to the Nuclear Envelope
Oocytes of four species of ascidians were examined with the electron microscope. Prior to fixation, oocytes were subjected to centrifugal forces of 10-15,000 g for 5-10 min and were compared with uncentrifuged oocytes. Intranuclear annulate lamellae (IAL) are distributed uniformly around the periphery of the nucleus of the uncentrifuged oocyte. Centrifugation produces a marked flattening of the...
متن کاملObservations on Spermiogenesis in the Fungus Gnat Sciara Coprophila
Although 9-membered centrioles are found in somatic tissues of Sciara, the centriole which lies at the spindle pole of the second meiotic division in male Sciara is composed of a row of approximately 70 short tubules in an oval array. Shortly after telophase of this unequal division, in the daughter cell destined to undergo spermiogenesis, microtubules become confluent with the tubules of the c...
